8 EU Programs and 14 Private Entities Financing Hydrogen Projects in Europe
As of the beginning of 2021, over 30 countries have produced hydrogen roadmaps. Nevertheless, the green hydrogen sector is at an early stage of development. If the goals of the energy transition and the role of hydrogen are to be achieved, the creation of financing frames for hydrogen projects should accelerate.
According to estimates, by 2030, some $300bn will be invested in the entire hydrogen sector. The public sector is to invest $70bn. It underscores the extent of the challenge facing the private sector and private finance.
Consequently, in the hydrogen sector, we will probably see combine of public support schemes and private financing mechanisms.
EU Hydrogen Strategy
In July 2020, the European Commission released its hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe, which includes a target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of European electrolyzer capacity to produce green hydrogen by 2030.
European Union plans to invest €27 bn in electrolyzers and distribution of hydrogen in the EU.
Investments are to be realized under EU programs (see excel file). In addition to public funding, companies and non-public capital groups are emerging that see hydrogen among their investment areas (see excel file).
