Southern African Development Community Region – Electricity Generation Mix

Established in 1992, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a Regional Economic Community comprising 16 Member States; Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The SADC goal is regional socio-economic cooperation and integration as well as political and security cooperation. One area of activity is renewable energy in Africa.

The “Renewable Energy Transitions in a Period of Debt Distress in Southern Africa” report created by the Boston University Global Development Policy Center, SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, International Development Law Unit of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria and Rocky Mountain Institute emphasizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has had major effects on the energy sector in the SADC region, with repercussions for financing for renewable energy.

In addition, ongoing debt challenges in SADC countries could drive up the cost of capital and undermine private investment.

According to the report’s authors, the RE sector in SADC countries faces significant financing gaps that the development finance institutions should fill by direct investment and by developing instruments to de-risk projects.

Currently, more than 60% of electricity in SADC countries is generated using coal. Wind and solar power account for only 5% of electricity production.

The large share of fossil fuels in the energy mix and problems with financing renewable energy projects could become a key brake on the energy transition in the SADC region.
